The postgraduate diploma in mental health nursing equips students with the knowledge, skills and attitude to pursue a mental health nursing career. It represents a rigorous combination of theoretical work in the classroom, along with practical experience in clinical settings during practice placement. This will equip the students with the skills and knowledge needed to care for clients in increasingly complex situations, both in the hospital and the community. Theoretical modules are designed to cover the many subjects needed for nursing, including: health sciences, psychology, sociology, leadership and politics, as well as the fiscal aspects of nursing. The program will focus on the importance of caring and compassion, whilst delivering evidence-based care in partnership with other health and social care practitioners, patients and their families. It has been designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to respond to the complex, diverse and evolving nature of health and social care provision. An emphasis will be placed on the development of professional identity as well as effective communication skills. Key themes (including communication and counseling skills, assessment and management of common conditions, decision making and leadership skills) will be developed progressively throughout the program. Biosciences and psychosocial, spiritual, ethical and legal aspects of care will also form a holistic approach to care.

One purpose of the Mental Health Nursing Program is to facilitate the growth and development of nurses who have undertaken to study this specialty at a postgraduate diploma level to be intellectually active practitioners and promote evidence led practice for the benefit of individuals with a mental health problem. The students are prepared to assist individuals with a mental health problem to cope with life and regain their individuality, independence and self-esteem. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of a safe practice on mental health nursing through a shortened fast-track study methodology to produce a reflective and informed mental health nurse practitioner who will utilize research findings and evidence to enhance quality care of individuals in hospital and community settings. In addition to developing skills for a higher level of practice, MHN provides leadership and directions required in this emerging branch of study in the sultanate
