In 1991, Regional Nursing Institute-Sur (RNI-Sur) was established in Sur Wilayate to meet the nursing manpower needs of the healthcare services in South Sharqiya Region. In September of that year, the institute accepted its first intake of 28 students. By September 2016, 738 students had graduated and become an integral part of Omani’s much needed and fast growing labor force. While the number of graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing program since 2018-2020 reached (93) graduates to date.

Ever since its establishment, Oman College of health Sciences-SSB (Sur Nursing Institute) has strived to provide quality education and support to the health care institutions in the region. Quality has always been the first concern and the driving force behind its plans and initiatives. In addition, OCHS- South Sharqiya strives to continually respond to the changes, needs and demands of the nursing program, education system, staff and other stakeholders. This led to acknowledging our vital role in the region and local community by various stakeholders.

Despite numerous challenges related to management & administration, Bachelor of Nursing Program and its implementation, human resources, students and student support services, academic support services & infrastructure,  OCHS- South Sharqiya Branch has achieved many accomplishments and overcome several challenges. These achievements include building a collaborative working environment, enhancing the quality of the BSN through its active participation in curriculum reviews and curriculum task forces, contributing significantly towards Omanization of nursing workforce in the region which is 56% among nursing teachers. Currently OCHS-South Sharqiya Branch has 179 students including both nursing students ad foundation programme students, and is run by a total of 27 staff, 21 of them are academic staff.

OCHS-South Sharqiya Branch has a well-equipped lab facility including Simulation lab which is equipped with a wide range of Simulators ranging from low fidelity to medium fidelity mannequins, namely Nurse Kelly and Nurse Anne Sim pad, which are medium fidelity simulators, which bring clinical practice close to reality. There is a well-equipped multimedia media lab with high speed internet facility and smart board.
