ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICE

 

REGISTRY

Academic registry service is a critical component of academic support services .The Head of Students Affairs section, who was trained by HEAC, is responsible for registration and keeping students records. The curriculum Development Assistant is responsible for students' records of academic progression. The year coordinators in collaboration with course teachers track student's absenteeism.

LIBRARY

Suhar Branch has a well-established library with one librarian full time available for the users. Teaching/learning materials are available in the library . These include books, journals, audio, video materials, anatomy and physiology models of body organs.

The books are classified under 3 categories:

  1. Lending book.
  2. Reference book.
  3. Student class set.

The number of books in the first two categories is 1360 while the number of books for student class set is 1000 which will be given to the students at the beginning of the semester according to the subjects which they learn and will be collected back at the end of each semester.

IT  RESOURCES & SERVICES & LERANING RESOURCES

Suhar Branch has two Multimedia laboratories, the existing one is equipped with 20 working stations and 1 PC for teacher wherein exchange of online information can be done.  There is another NEW MML equipped with 34 working stations for students .   There are seven classrooms that are also equipped with one computer each while three classrooms are with smart board for instructional purposes.

The nursing laboratory is adequately spaced and equipped with life-size mannequins, variety of model, and supplies. It has four training beds and an area to consolidate theoretical learning.  An additional interactive medium digital simulator (Nursing Kelly) for nursing care and procedures facilitates students’ acquisition of skills and enhance decision making skills. A separate room for first aid equipped with CPR Mannequins for adult children and infant.  

ACADEMIC ADVISING

Suhar Branch has well-defined academic advising committee constitute of Chairperson and three members. The policy of The Academic advising is to ensure that students receive appropriate guidance and support to facilitate their learning  it provide information to teachers and students on how to seek advice and teachers on his/her role on academic advising to make appropriate  choices and facilitates a successful academic experience.

Academic advisers shall be appointed for each student from among the institute faculty at the beginning of each academic year. A student may request to change the academic advisor at an appropriate point of time according to the established policy.  At present the academic advisors main responsibility is limited to help the students, whose performance and conduct is below the expected standard and examine the factors attribute to situation.

Each academic advisor will be assigned for six to eight students for advising, in one semester two sessions of counselling is conducted in week 4 and 8. Each student should meet the advisor at least once in a semester. The weak students were identified and referred to the concern course coordinators for proper remedial activities or tutorials to improve their performance. Counseling and assisting students to discover their own potential and capabilities are also being done.

STUDENT LEARNING AND SUPPORT

Unlimited support is given to all students through additional worksheets and extracurricular activities. Special attention is given to weak students and under probation to help them cope up with the English courses through remedial classes and academic advising during the Foundation year. Moreover, nursing students can approach the teachers of English for linguistic support through their projects and studies.

TEACHING RESOURCES

Suhar Branch strives to employ a variety of teaching methods and approaches in its academic activities. Student-centered learning, problem-based learning, case-based teaching and reflective learning are among the approaches that the institute should adopt to promote the facilitation role of teaching staff and enhance students’ sense of responsibility and accountability towards their learning.  Such approaches require teaching staff to shift their focus from teacher-centered approaches to student-centered approaches, have adequate time to prepare learning activities, students to have sufficient time for self-directed learning and sufficient resources for interactive simulation and e-learning.

To achieve these Suhar branch have class room’s multimedia lab with full-fledged resources and adequate number of PC‘s, internet with great speed and Wi-Fi accessible all time for the teachers and students.  

The Practical Room lab is equipped with all needed supplies for the demonstrations and return demonstrations of the lab courses. The Laboratory is now equipped with a basic Nursing Dolls. Manikin designed to teach all basic fundamental skills

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Suhar Branch, together with the Ministry of Health, extends its support to the students by providing services geared towards its mission and vision; that is of molding a well rounded and skilled professional nurses that will serve the people of the Sultanate of  Oman.

  • Career and Employment Services

The graduates are fully equipped with the necessary lifelong skills that will enable them to be competent and professional nurses empowered to face new challenges as they embark on their chosen fields of specialization.  In the final year, representatives from health care institutions are invited to the institute to meet the students and share prospective career pathways and future scope of activities.

  • Students’ Finances

Currently the Ministry of Health provides students with allowance .The amount vary according to the distance of the student's location from the branch. Students are provided with free education, learning materials and uniforms.

  • Accommodation, Catering and Transportation

Transportation from Suhar branch to various training areas, community and clinical settings are made available to the students. Catering services are available to the students provided by the hospital cafeteria, which is under dietitian’s supervision and Ministry of Health protocols for food hygiene. The students are charged a reasonable price for the foods they are offered.  Suhar Branch does not provide accommodation services to students.

  • Medical and Counseling Facilities

The health and wellness of the students is one of the concerns of the college. Thus, upon enrolment, all students undergo a health checkup and a record of all students who have special medical backgrounds is maintained and put on surveillance. Any time the need arises, Suhar Health Center and Suhar Hospital are within reach to cater for their medical needs.

  • Social and Recreational Services and Facilities

The OCHS- Suhar Branch provides leisure activities that enhance the social skills of the students. There are term end parties and social gatherings to provide recreational activities to the students. There is sports equipment like table tennis; badminton is available for the students. There is also an open shaded area with adequate tables and chairs for students’ gatherings and socialization.

Nursing Kelly is a full-body, lifelike manikin designed to teach all skills from basic patient handling to advanced nursing, including the measurement of noninvasive blood pressure and the auscultation and recognition of normal and abnormal heart, lung and bowel sounds.
